Zed - Renegade Fighter

The Christchurch pop sound - continuing on from yesterday.

This will be a series of small band snapshots, starting with Zed.

Zed

Zed is how the letter 'Z' is pronounced in New Zealand. It is also the second part of the country's name, when abbreviated - En Zed (NZ). Zed was a trio of young highschool boys, with vocal duties shared between Nathan King and Ben Cambell. In 2000, blonde dreadlocked guitarist, Andy Lynch joined the band. In Renegade Fighter, Ben carries the verse, and Nathan(red shirt), chorus. Renegade Fighter comes off the album Silencer. Their latest release is This Little Empire. The band is now on an extended break, with members explorin other avenues.

Atlas

Whoa - That's a big image! With Zed on extended vacation, Zed bass player/vocalist Ben Cambell set up new band Atlas, with fellow band member Adrian Palmer. Ben brought along sister Beth, who had been singing back up vocals in the States for various artists, and US solo singer Sean Cunningham completed the band. When Palmer quit the band, Lynch, from Zed , stepped in. Crawl was a huge run away hit for Atlas, staying at number one for six weeks.

Nathan King

One of the nice guys, singer-songwriter, Nathan King, from Zed, recorded his solo album in England, and this is the first single release off it.

Anika Moa

Dreams In My Head is one of singer/songwriter Anika Moa's latest songs. Although now alternating between Auckland and Australia, she was living in Christchurch when she won Rockquest (a band contest for high school students) Quickly she was signed to the Atlantic Records, New York, where they hoped to make her the new Jewel. With her cheeky personality, a love of her maori heritage, and a dirty little NZ mouth, she returned home to where the fit was better. Anika has since come to grips with her sexuality, and Dreams In My Head is written for her girlfriend. She has one of the naughtiest cheekiest personalities in New Zealand music - what we call here, a bit of a dag - which you can't tell from her beautiful voice and gentle lyrics.
NB: Disregard youtube comments - Moa is also a maori name - it was an extremely large native bird.
